A T20 match is three hours long and the odds can flip four or five times inside it. That is why exchange users love the format: you don't have to be right about who wins, only about where the price goes next. This guide explains how a T20 match is priced phase by phase, and how to lock in a profit – or cut a loss – before the last ball.

Why T20 is different

In a Test match, the better team usually wins. In T20, one batter can decide the game in 20 balls. Favourites lose far more often than their odds suggest to newcomers, and prices overreact to single overs. Both facts shape everything below.

How the three phases are priced

Powerplay (overs 1–6)

Only two fielders are allowed outside the circle, so runs come quickly and so do wickets. Odds swing hard here. A team at 55 for 0 looks unbeatable; the same team at 40 for 3 looks finished. Neither is true yet. The first session market – runs in 6 overs – is settled at the end of this phase.

Middle overs (7–15)

Spinners come on, the field spreads, and the scoring rate normally drops. Prices move more slowly. This is the calmest time to enter or exit a position, and the phase where wickets in hand start to matter more than the current run rate.

Death overs (16–20)

Teams with wickets left often score 50 to 70 in the last five. A side that is 120 for 3 after 15 is in a much stronger position than one at 130 for 6, even though it has fewer runs. If you remember one thing about T20 pricing, make it that.

Locking in profit: a worked example

Because you can both back and lay on an exchange, you can close a bet early, the way you'd sell a share.

1. Before the match you back Team A at 2.10 for Rs 1,000. If they win, your profit is Rs 1,100.
2. Team A starts well and their price falls to 1.50.
3. You now lay Team A at 1.50 for Rs 1,400. Your liability on that lay is Rs 700.

You make Rs 400 whichever way the match goes. The lay stake is simply your back stake × back odds ÷ current lay odds (1,000 × 2.10 ÷ 1.50 = 1,400). The same method works in reverse to limit a loss when the price moves against you – you accept a small fixed loss instead of risking the full stake.

Things worth checking before any T20

• Toss and dew. In night games, chasing is often easier. Wait for the toss.
• Ground size and recent scores. A par score can be 150 at one venue and 200 at another.
• Who bowls at the death. A team with two reliable death bowlers defends totals that others can't.
• The playing eleven. Announced at the toss. Don't bet on a lineup you're guessing.

Staking: the boring part that decides everything

• Use a flat stake – the same small amount on every match, around 1–2% of what you've set aside.
• Don't increase the stake to recover a loss. T20 is random enough to hand you five losses in a row.
• Limit session bets. There's a new fancy market every few overs, and betting on all of them is how a small loss becomes a big one.
• Stop for the day at a fixed loss. Decide the number before the match, not during it.

Common T20 mistakes

Backing a heavy favourite at 1.20 "because it's safe". You risk Rs 1,000 to make Rs 200, and T20 favourites lose often enough to wipe out several wins.

Betting off the TV picture. Your stream is seconds behind the stadium. The market already knows.

Betting on your own team. Supporting and betting are different jobs. If you can't lay your favourite side, don't bet on their matches.
